Lee Westwood Golf School conquer the UK

It has been an unprecedented year of success for the Lee Westwood Golf School in 2018, winning two major UK national championships in as many weeks.

The Intercollegiate Tour final hosted by Hesketh Golf Club in Southport, and the British Schools and Colleges Tour final at Trevose Golf Club in Cornwall, are the two premier events in the college calendar. At each event, regional winners from across the UK come together to complete for national glory.

The Cheshire school sent a six-strong nett team of Liam Cornwall, Harry Shaw, Henry Beischer, Eden Inglis, Luke Yardley, Zarak Curley to compete at the Intercollegiate Tour final, and led the 3-round event from start to finish, taking the title by an impressive 9 shots.

Gavin Hamlyn, Lee Westwood Golf School Programme Manager said, “The tournament was played in challenging windy conditions, but we seemed to cope best throughout the event. We did speak a lot before the event about the conditions we could expect, and as such modified our practice, which really helped. The team did a fantastic job preparing.”

Attention then turned to the British Schools and Colleges tour final where the Cheshire School sent their scratch team to compete. “We entered a nett and gross team into the different competitions, so it gave all students the opportunity to represent the school, as opposed to just playing the low handicap players in both events", Gavin Hamlyn.

The Trevose Golf Club put on some superb weather. After the first day the four-strong gross team of Ellis Muckley, George Mitchell, Zarak Curley, and Harry Shaw were 9 shots off the place. However, fantastic rounds of 69 (-3) for Ellis and 70 (-2) for Zarak helped the team to a one shot victory after the final day.

“It’s fantastic to see the continued successes of the golf school, with 10 National Team Championship title victories for the school group in the last 8 years, which illustrates which illustrates the hard work of the team and the subsequent success of the programme.”
