National Champions 2018

The Cheshire School has been crowned national champions, after winning the nett competition at the final of the Intercollegiate Tour (an amateur world ranking event) which was held at Hesketh Golf Club last week.

The Intercollegiate Tour involves colleges across the UK who compete in regional qualifying events to earn their right to compete at the national final. The final was played over 3 rounds, each school team consisting of 6 players, and with the best 4 scores counting for each round.

Cheshire enter a nett team into the Intercollegiate Tour, and a gross team into the British Schools and Colleges Tour - which are the two main school competitions in the UK. "We have done this, so it gives all students the opportunity to represent the school, as opposed to just playing the low handicap players in both events". Gavin Hamlyn - Golf Programme Manager.

The first day 2 rounds were played in extremely windy conditions, but the Cheshire School coped with the difficult conditions the best, and led by 6 shots after the first day.

"We spoke a lot before the event about the kind of playing conditions we could expect, and the players modified their practice leading into the competition. E.g., we worked punch shots as we had anticipated windy conditions. The players did a fantastic job preparing." Gavin Hamlyn - Golf Programme Manager.

On the final day, Liam Cornwall shot an excellent 71 (nett 64) which helped lead the team to victory by 9 shots. An 8th National Title victory for the school group since 2010! Zarak Curley finished 5th in the Boys Gross competition after rounds of 76, 76, 72.

The winning team was: Luke Yardley, Liam Cornwall, Zarak Curley, Eden Inglis, Henry Beischer, and Harry Shaw.

The Essex School (who were the reigning champions) finished in a respectable 4th place.

Attention now turns to the British Schools and Colleges National Final, which is to be played in Trevose next week, with both Essex and Cheshire vying for the title.
